making shoes is a bold goal. For a newbie (and some lazy veterans), any plain brown work boots will do. The key is to not have any giant logos visible. Some of us got our medieval turn shoes from limited time orders off of the Dagorhir forums. others get them from costume shops, but you get what you pay for there (cheap $5-10 pairs will last only 5-10 battles, while the $150 pair lasts forever). Common sense is a good rule of thumb. Does it look like it is obviously made in the 21st century? then you should pick something else.

Currently Kohls is selling boots that would work EXTREMELY well for our group besides them having a rubber sole. Their large brown boots with a big metal on the sides of them. If you catch them on sale I'm sure you'll get a good deal for a nice looking pair of boots.

Shoes are really important to get right. You need to be able to fight in them and count on them to hold up to combat. If you happen to find something like that that is medieval looking then go with those. If not then they should be black or even better brown with no tags or logos showing (going over them with a marker is usually fine). My suggestion goes to wrestling shoes, they are soft allowing you to have better footwork but have grip that allows you to walk on surfaces things like my flat leather soled shoes can struggle with. If you trust your field to be free of things like glass and other bad stuff try fighting without shoes on for a bit (probably not in the winter). That's what the wrestling shoes and medieval shoes are close to.

Cronus and Richard could I have some links to some of those shoes/boots that you use. Especially the wrestling I can't find any that are like crazy colors. or black.

With wrestling shoes you are going to run into them generally being outlandish colors. My thinking is that in the absence of good leather shoes simple black shoes are best. the wrestling shoes that I am thinking of have a lower profile and are pretty flexible, I had a friend that would wear them and if I didn't have my own pair of medieval shoes I would be playing around more with the wrestling shoes.

Something like these guys would be my first choice barring any hand me downs from someone who happens to wrestle. http://www.wwsport.com/Wrestling/SKU/AD ... Shoes.aspx. Of course, they will cost just about as much as any other shoe will and they'd need to be painted/dyed rid of their "interesting" color choices. Again, my preference is towards low profile minimalist footwear so shop around before you go to buy anything. Try fighting a bit in shoes similar to what you might end up with so that you get something you are comfortable in.

These might be good, or for 40$ they might be crap. They look medieval enough that wearing them will put you up and over the majority of Dag when it comes to looks, assuming the rest of your kit falls in line. If you have shoes to fall back on then experimenting with some better looking stuff might not be bad.

Actually, I just saw your thread on the main forum. The deal that a few of us got was from Viking leather crafts basically, they are the shoes I have, though I'm not sure which model, they were kinda new to the shoe scene when I got mine and probably don't make them quite the same.

I have both http://www.vikingleathercrafts.com/cata ... Path=42_65
and http://www.vikingleathercrafts.com/cata ... Path=42_70

They do have some quirks, as they are leather they will not last forever like modern shoes do. You need to walk a bit on some concrete to rough the sole up a bit before you try to fight. However, fighting on concrete will destroy them. The pair I first got has a small but fixable hole at the heel so I set them aside an got another pair instead. They are what I would recommend though having seen your price range.
